Major Surgery for Next UK from 1977.
Tenor Saxophone – Don Weller ; Guitar – Jimmy Roche ; Drums – Tony Marsh ; Bass Guitar – Bruce Collcutt
First post for 2013 and the first time out in blogland for this obscure privately pressed Don Weller led session recorded at Virtual Earth in London '77.
Here's a few lines lifted from discogs by ultimathulerecords:
You don't get much quality jazz-rock/fusion from the UK in the mid-late 1970's, as most bands went either too schmaltzy or got too funky, or worse. So this was a surprise. At first I thought maybe Don Weller's sax was a bit too dry, but he cuts it well against the solid rhythm section. Mostly the structure reminds me of German bands of the same era, Morpheus, Munju, Moira, etc. Although there are references to Nucleus and Isotope. A nice one!

Don Weller is back playing after a bit of a health scare.I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he blew up a storm (as usual)

Many thanks Bacoso!!!
Thank you!
Thanks Bacoso. Did not know this album, obviously its distribution was rather confidential. It reminded me that I have a live album of Hannibal with the Weller-Spring 4tet (1981) on Mole Jazz. I've posted it on my blog.
Cheers
new to me too [:-) very nice, THANKS!
very nice record I had never so much as heard of before! Thanks once again - I have benefitted SO much from the OOP music on your blog. It is a wonderful thing. Thanks!

Beautiful. Thanks.
I enjoy this kind of stuff and thank you for sharing such rare music!
thanks a million!
About 1974 I went to see Roland Kirk at Ronnie Scott's. Major Surgery were the support and I was totally blown away by the drummer. It was 25 years later when talking with Tony Marsh that I realised the drummer had been him and I became a big fan, his drumming still being fantastic. It was a major blow that he died last year, leaving a big hole in the free jazz scene and taking a lovely man from us. Thanks for this.
Thank you!
